Minerva Stiftung mourns the loss of Matthias Koenig
The Minerva Stiftung mourns the loss of its long-standing member of the Minerva Fellowship Committee, Prof. Dr. Matthias Koenig. Matthias Koenig died on January 12 after a serious illness at the age of 54.
Matthias Koenig was a member of the Minerva Fellowship Committee from January 2015 to December 2021. Due to the tense situation in Israel and because of his attachment to the Minerva Fellowship Programme, he also stepped in again in July 2024 to support the German-Israeli commission in its work under difficult circumstances. The scientist was very committed to Israeli-German scientific cooperation and exchange and was highly dedicated to the work of the Fellowship Committee.
Matthias Koenig was born in Hamburg in 1971 and, after graduating from high school in 1991, studied sociology, protestant theology, and religious studies. He held a professorship in sociology in Göttingen from 2006, since 2020 he has been Professor of Macrosociology at the Max Weber Institute for Sociology at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg.
During his long academic career, he spent ten years as a Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Goettingen until 2021.
With the passing of Matthias Koenig, the Minerva Stiftung mourns not only the loss of a brilliant scholar and supporter of the Minerva Fellowship Programme.
At the meetings of the German-Israeli Minerva Fellowship Committee, which take place twice a year, he always had a clear stance on the topics being discussed and enriched the discussions with his deep analyses, while always being very thoughtful and respectful. With his discursive style and his ability to recognize excellent quality in projects even beyond his own expertise, he was a decisive reviewer in the committee.
He had an incredible ability to understand and analyze complex political and societal processes without becoming overly activist. His aspiration was to be true and fair—this made him very touching.
We will greatly miss his discreet, reliable, and serious manner, as well as his generous and collegial personality. We are very grateful for the time we were able to spend together and will remember him fondly. Our deepest condolences go out to his family.
