* Research activities and objectives

High quality single crystals and epitaxial films of the high temperature superconductors are studied for their fundamental properties and applications. The role played by the anisotropy in achieving high critical temperatures and its implications on the behavior of the vortex phase in strong magnetic fields is investigated by a number of experimental methods. These include the study of normal metal / superconductor contacts, the fabrication and study of tunneling junctions of various kinds, measurements of the surface impedance at microwave frequencies, the study of the global and local magnetization, its field and time dependence, and other aspects of the vortex dynamics such as flux creep and flux flow.
