1ST Minerva Fellows Meeting
Dr. Stefan Litt c/o Richard Koebner center for German History Hebrew University of Jerusalem P.O.B. 10155 99875 Tsur Hadassa e-mail: Sf53if17@yahoo.de Will give a talk titled: Minute-books (pinkassim) and the leaderships of Ashkenazi Jewish communities between 1500-1800 Abstract. The minute books of Ashkenazi (central and eastern-European) communities have since long been used in research as useful historical sources. However, historians tended to explore these sources mainly in a local context and paid little attention to the wide context of this type of sources. The Ashkenazi world comprised many countries in Europe and must be seen as a cultural entity within the Jewish world. Therefore, one may expect certain similarities of the minute books, may the be from the Netherlands or from Poland. Exploring these fascinating manuscripts, mainly written in Yiddish and Hebrew reveals many aspects of the internal administration of the communities, both in a local and in a general perspective. The wide view, suggested in my research, will enable historians to better understand the characteristic composition of minute books in general as well as their importance for historiography.
